Water is essential for human survival, but freshwater resources are increasingly strained due to pollution. Water pollution occurs when substances interfere with water’s beneficial use or ecosystem functioning. Effects include groundwater contamination, impacting human health and ecosystems.According to the 2021 World Water Development Report released by UNESCO, the global use of freshwater has increased six-fold in the past 100 years and has been growing by about 1% per year since the 1980s. Less than 1 percent of the earth’s freshwater is actually accessible to us. Without action, the challenges will only increase by 2050, when global demand for freshwater is expected to be one-third greater than it is now.
